Podcast Review | Steven Marks from Guzman Y Gomez: The Mentor with Mark Bouris

By Ben Rundle | Portfolio Manager at NAOS Asset Management

When a company comes to IPO in Australia, fund managers often don’t get long to research the business before they are asked to bid for stock. This being the case, it helps us significantly if we can find out as much about a business as possible before the company comes to market. It has been rumoured for a while now that Guzman Y Gomez is planning to list in Australia some time soon. This podcast is an interview with the founder and CEO of Guzman’s, Steven Marks.

Whilst a Burrito business shouldn’t be hard to understand at a high level, what we like finding out is why it is better than the competition, how they motivate staff, what is their reason for existence? Steven gives us insight into the difficult background in New York, why he started the business and what has been the key successful ingredient for Guzman’s rise up the fast food chain. You can learn a lot about a business by hearing from the founder prior to he or she being in a meeting room pitching to fund managers. This podcast is a great way to do just that.
